Ceramic slip cast teapot made in Tokoname and wood-fired in a climbing kiln. It is a yokode kyūsu (side-handle teapot) with removable lid. The surface is textured and coloured from the wood ash during the firing process. The teapot is ideal for Japanese or other leaf teas and has a built-in ceramic mesh filter for straining tea leaves when pouring. It can also accommodate a tea bag. The lid is made using the suriawase technique where the body and lid are rubbed together to ensure a tight fit.

  • Colour: Black and Brown
  • Volume: 220ml
  • Packaging: Cardboard box
  • Name stickers on the lid are removable

Please note: Since this is a wood-fired product, each teapot is unique in terms of the gradient and pattern of the black and brown colours on the base.

Tokoname is the location of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with a ceramics history dating back to the 12th Century. Over the years it has become famous for bonsai and shōchū pots, and also its distinctive teapots, which include red clay teapots as a recognisable item from Tokoname. It is also the largest producer of maneki neko (beckoning cats) in Japan.

The clay used for Tokoname ware teapots is rich in iron oxide, which reacts with tannins in tea to reduce bitterness and give the tea a lovely mellow flavour.

Gyokko-toen is a third generation teapot manufacturer in Tokoname City. It was established in 1961 and produces a wide range of teapots using the distinctive Tokoname clay. By wood-firing the teapot, it gets natural colours and patterns from the ash and heat.

ISOBE is a leading teapot wholesaler within Tokoname and works with various kilns to source and sell different shapes, sizes and styles to customers around the world.
